Brave New Life Project is a woman-led nonprofit dedicated to empowering individuals transitioning from the animal agriculture industry into careers that are more humane, sustainable, and fulfilling. Our organization is rooted in compassion, community, and the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to shape their future.

We support workers and their families through free, personalized employment assistance and connections to vital community resources. By fostering sustainable alternatives, we aim to build a better future for individuals and the environment alike.

Client Success stories

First story: Brave New Life’s first client was a young immigrant working in the slaughterhouse. Her first position was work on the floor where meat was packaged. She had to catch large chunks of meat falling from a high conveyor belt and wrap them to be packaged. This was VERY HARD WORK, especially considering her size and the fast moving lines. When she asked for a safer position, she was only offered to work with knives.

According to Human Rights Watch, government statistics show that from 2015 to 2018, a slaughterhouse worker who worked with knives has reported an amputation or was sent to the hospital for in-patient treatment NEARLY EVERY OTHER DAY. When this employee stated that she did not want to work with knives and was afraid of injury, her manager fired her. Thankfully her story doesn’t end there, she was referred to Brave New Life Project, and she was connected with an employment specialist who began helping her look for jobs immediately. Fast forward a few years and this client enjoying life again.

Thanks to Brave New Life, our client was able to get a new job and return to college to take classes. She’s now on her way to becoming a CNA!

Second client success story: One worker’s struggles highlights the abuse clearly in slaughterhouses. He was a hard working individual. He was caught talking to activists outside of the slaughter house. He was questioned on whether he was dedicated to his job, which he had worked diligently at for years, and then he was fired. He struggled to make ends meet and he applied for unemployment.

When JBS was notified they offered him his job back. If he refused, he would not be eligible for unemployment, if he agreed he would have to face the same people who so easily discarded him. Due to the pressure of supporting a family he returned to the job with the idea of helping his community who still worked there.

He endured being overworked with little breaks, even his bathroom breaks were timed and heavily watched. The anxiety of being called in to discuss his progress with his supervisor frequently, caused him to build resentment about the unrealistic quotas. He worked there for several years while picking up multiple side jobs including running a business.

After a few years he decided to quit again and move on to a different career. He mustered up the courage to ask for help. Brave New Life Project connected him to community resources. Helped him find jobs to apply for and helped him during the interview process. He was able to find a job that respects him and the hard work he does and he reported “I feel like I have finally arrived in America!”

Brave New Life is working to help others who are currently trapped in a meat processing plant or slaughterhouse. But we can’t do it without your help! Your donation will help give workers the best opportunities for finding sustainable employment by providing assistance with creating and improving resumes, interview coaching, legal advice, and more!
